1. JESUS IS THE ETERNAL, PRE-EXISTENT SON OF GOD

Before Jesus became the God-man, he existed fully as God in eternity past.  He is the Creator of all things and all was created for Him.

John 1:1In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Comment:  “the Word” refers to Jesus, the living Word of God whom the Scriptures, the written Word of God, speak of and point to.
John 5:39 Jesus’ words—You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me.

John 8:58Jesus said to them, “Truly truly I say to you, Before Abraham was, I AM.”

Comment: “I AM” is the name that God spoke to Moses from the burning bush when he told him to lead the Jewish people out of Egypt.  “I AM” is a name that refers to God’s eternal, self-existence which is not dependent on anything or anyone. In this verse, Jesus claimed to be God.

John 1:3All things were made through him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

Colossians 1:16For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

2. JESUS APPEARED AND MINISTERED IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

Jesus appeared in the Old Testament at times in the form of an “unsought, intermittent and temporary, visible and audible manifestation of God the Son in human form, by which God communicated something to certain conscious human beings on earth prior to the birth of Jesus Christ.”  James Borland, “Christ in the Old Testament”

If you take the time to read the following accounts of God appearing in human form to people in the Old Testament, you will see descriptions of God that include examples of how God:

3. JESUS BECAME FLESH IN THE PERSON OF JESUS OF NAZARETH AND WAS BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY BY MIRACULOUS CONCEPTION AND VIRGIN BIRTH.

Isaiah 7:14Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Comment:  Immanuel is a name that means, God with us.

Luke 1:30-35And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.  And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”  And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”  And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.”

John 1:14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

1 John 1:1-3a—That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us:…”

Comment:  Jesus became a man who could be seen and touched and heard.

4. HE IS FULLY GOD AND FULLY MAN; PERFECT DEITY AND HUMANITY

Jesus is God

He forgave sin

Jesus claimed to be God

Comment:  When Jesus said “I and the Father are one”, the Jewish people who were around tried to kill him because they said that he was making himself equal with God.

Others said he was God

Jesus performed miracles

Jesus healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead, multiplied food, gave the lame the ability walk, and much much more.  For a list of the miracles of Jesus and where they are recorded in Scripture, please see lifeofchrist.com.

Jesus is a man

There are a host of other things that Jesus experienced that pointed to his humanity including such things as walking, sitting, cooking, having a family, having facial hair, being circumcised, being tired etc…

Comment:  We all have to look at the claims of Jesus as well as his life and actions he performed while he was on the earth and begin to figure out if Jesus was a liar, a crazy lunatic, or if he is really Lord and God.

5. HE LIVED A SINLESS HUMAN LIFE

Comment:  T.C. Edwards points out that even though tempted, Jesus never confessed any sin and Jesus’ life is in the middle of the Bible, which is a book that records and points out many of the sins of its other major characters.

Hebrews 4:15—For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

What else does the Bible say?

Why did Jesus’ sinless life matter?

Comment:  Jesus’ sinless life allowed him to be worthy to serve God perfectly and allowed him to make propitiation for the sins of people (the act of diverting to himself and becoming the focus of the punishment and wrath of God meant for sinful people)

6. JESUS OFFERED HIMSELF AS A SACRIFICE FOR THE SINS OF EVERY PERSON. HE DIED ON THE CROSS, SHEDDING HIS BLOOD, IN FULL SUBSTITUTION AND ATONEMENT FOR THE SINS OF ALL MEN EVERYWHERE.

Comment:  Jesus’ death did many things, but the pinnacle of his death was to provide a perfect sacrifice for sins, reconciling sinful man to a holy God.

Jesus’ Death on the cross:

7. HE WAS BURIED

1 Corinthians 15:3,4a—For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:  that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried,…

John 19:40-42—So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.  Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.  So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

8. ON THE THIRD DAY HE AROSE BODILY FROM THE DEAD, ALIVE FOREVERMORE

God raised Jesus

What affect did Jesus’ resurrection have?

Jesus appeared to many people on the earth after his resurrection:

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 and Acts 1:3
  2. To Mary of Magdalene--Mark 16:9-11; John 20:10-18
  3. To the other women at the tomb--Matthew 28:8-10
  4. To Peter in Jerusalem--Luke 24:34
  5. To the two travelers on the road--Mark 16:12,13
  6. To eleven disciples behind closed doors--Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25
  7. To all the disciples (with Thomas and excluding Judas Iscariot)--John 20:26-31; 1 Corinthians 15:5
  8. To seven disciples while fishing--John 21:1-4
  9. To eleven disciples on the mountain--Matthew 28:16-20
  10. To a crowd of 500--1 Corinthians 15:6
  11. To His brother James--1 Corinthians 15:7
  12. To those who watched Jesus ascend into Heaven--Luke 24:44-51; Acts 1:3-8

1 Corinthians 15:14,17—And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching and your faith is in vain…and…your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

9. HE LATER ASCENDEDD BODILY INTO HEAVEN WHERE AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER, HE NOW INTERCEDES FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE ON HIM.

Comment:  The ascension is the important link between his work on earth and his work in heaven which begins with the ascension.  John Walvoord, “Jesus Christ our Lord”

Mark 16:19; Luke 24:51 and Acts 1:6-11 all record Jesus’ ascension into heaven after his resurrection.

What did Jesus say about his ascension?

What is Jesus doing now?

When will Christ return?
